Air-Tro began on May 16, 1969 – the tenth wedding anniversary of founders John and Helen Helbing. John, a former naval officer and chemical engineer, started the company in the San Gabriel area with a deep technical foundation and a commitment to honest, high-quality work. The family’s contracting roots stretch further back. Bob and Tony’s great-grandfather, Alois Eck, founded Eck and Sons Roofing in Chicago in 1897. Alois was Helen Helbing’s grandfather. Helen’s father, John Gordon, worked at Eck & Sons, as well.

In 1975, the company launched a dedicated service department with scheduled maintenance agreements. That department grew rapidly. John retired at the end of 1993, and sons Tony (who joined in 1985 after a sales career in New York) and Bob (who joined in 1987 after earning a mechanical engineering degree from Caltech and working in aerospace) took full ownership and leadership.
