Air Conditioning Costs to Rise in 2015

For the first time in nine years, the Federal government is raising efficiency standards for air conditioning equipment. New EPA rules require residential cooling systems installed in California in 2015 to have a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) of 14 or higher. This will result in a 7% improvement in performance.

This will require a redesign by the manufacturers, raising equipment cost at the same time as it cuts electricity use. When the Federal government last raised efficiency rules in 2006, equipment prices rose up to 25% for some models.

We’re hoping to see less of a jump this time. But if you’ve been thinking it’s been getting time to retire your old cooling system, this might be the right time.
