As the Seasons Change: A Fall Checklist for Your A/C and Heating Equipment

As the Seasons Change: A Fall Checklist for Your A/C and Heating EquipmentWith busy schedules and active lives, it’s understandable that your HVAC unit isn’t your first concern.  However, as seasons change and we enter into the cooler weather, there are things you should do to ensure your heating unit runs safely and at peak performance. Read on to learn more about your HVAC unit’s fall checklist for maintenance and efficiency.

The easiest thing you can do as a homeowner is to change your air filter regularly. Filters should be checked at least once a month and replaced when necessary, at a minimum of every three months.

It is also worth considering installing a programmable thermostat. With a programmable thermostat, you can maximize energy efficiency by setting different temperatures for different times of the day. For example, while you are away at work or sleeping at night, you can set your thermostat a couple degrees cooler to reduce energy usage. During the cooler months, each degree of warmth can increase energy usage by 6-8 percent.

Properly seal all cooling and heating ducts. Focus on any ducts that run through the attic, along outside walls, or in an unheated basement or garage. By using duct sealing tape, ensure that all seams and connections are completely sealed.

All the above tips are things you can do yourself. However, the most important part of your HVAC fall checklist is to schedule an annual preventative maintenance check of your unit. Having professionals inspect your heating and cooling system will ensure all coils are cleaned properly, all parts are adequately lubricated, and all electrical connections are tight. By doing so you will ensure the safe operation and the highest efficiency of your unit.
