How The Ductless Mini Split Can Solve A Mighty Big Heating And Cooling ProblemAre there areas in your home where you can never get the temperature just right? Or, perhaps you are considering a room addition, converting a living space or just augmenting your heating and cooling system. A home-comfort solution that’s gaining notice, and offers great energy efficiency, is a convenient system called a ductless mini split.

How ductless mini splits work

Ductless mini splits deliver conditioned air to your home through a three-inch conduit running from the outdoor condenser unit to indoor air handlers. The conduit houses the refrigerant tubing, power cable and condensate drain. Up to four air handlers may be installed in any room in your home, either on the floor, wall or ceiling.

Excellent efficiency

One way mini splits deliver efficient heating and cooling is by utilizing independent temperature controls at the air handlers. This offers you the choice to heat or cool up to four rooms, or zones, adapting to the comfort needs of family members. Or, you can turn off individual air handlers to save energy if you like. The conduit has excellent efficiency with no air leaks, unlike ductwork that can lose up to 50 percent of heating and cooling energy to leaks and inadequate insulation in the average home.

Convenient package

Mini splits deliver smooth airflow of conditioned air exactly where you need it. Here are some of the other benefits and conveniences:

  • Mini splits are easier and less expensive to install compared to heat pumps and air conditioners. Only a three-inch hole in an outside wall is necessary to connect the conduit to the indoor air handlers. This is much less cumbersome than installing new ductwork and wiring.
  • The outdoor unit can be located up to 50 feet from the indoor air handlers. This gives you greater choices for its location.
  • The air handlers are usually installed on the wall in an unobtrusive manner. They may also be located flush in drop ceilings.
