When the temperatures start to cool down and summer is wrapping up, most of us are relieved to take a break from the hot sunshine and put down the sunblock for a few months. However, if you’re like many people, you also start to dread the fall allergies that you know are coming your way. While there are medicines that can help stop fall allergies, there are also things you can do in your home and in your daily life to help you keep them at bay. Use this guide to reduce the irritation associated with fall allergies and improve indoor air quality this season.
- Replacing your A/C and furnace filters on a regular basis is very important. While the particular equipment you are using should tell you how often to replace these items, many systems require bi-monthly replacements. Whenever possible, use high-efficiency with a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating above 11.
- Check pollen counts before you go outside. While you may not be able to avoid going outdoors on days with high pollen counts you can plan things like your outdoor exercise routine to help you avoid allergy outbreaks. Remember, pollen counts are lowest in the early evening.
- Take a shower before you get in bed. If you wake up sneezing in the morning, it could be because you’re dragging pollen and other allergens into your bed and onto your pillow via your skin and hair. A quick rinse can help you go to bed clean and wake up without sneezing.
- Have your ductwork inspected and cleaned if you live in an older home or it has been more than a few years since you’ve had it done. Dust, debris and other allergens can all end up in your HVAC system’s ductwork. When you turn the heat or AC on, those allergens could be pushed through the system and out into your home.
