Summer months bring beautiful weather and no shortage of allergies. Even in your home, it’s possible to be exposed to many common allergens that will leave you in discomfort. Here are the most insidious allergy triggers and how you can control them.

  • Dust mites: Microscopic insects should be controlled for anyone with asthma. Their food source is human skin flakes, which makes it important to wash bedding often. Dust mites, like many micro-organisms, thrive in moist and warm conditions, so keeping the humidity down will go a long way to limiting mites. Finally, use a vacuum with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter often and use allergen-proof bedding and linens.
  • Pets: If you are allergic to cats or dogs, it’s likely due to the pet dander they shed. Note that not all breeds emit the same amount of allergens, so it may be possible to get a breed that does not bother you. If you already have a pet that is irritating your allergies, vacuum often and try to give your pet its own area away from where you spend most of your time.
  • Mold: Mold is not only a common allergy trigger but is also bad for your health. It is a micro-organism that loves damp and dark conditions, often found in basements. Monitor humidity and keep it under a safe level year-round, ideally in the 30 to 40 percent range. Installing UV lights or purchasing an advanced filtration system will help to remove mold and other harmful particles.
  • Pollen: While pollen is an allergen primarily found outdoors, it can be tracked in on your shoes, clothes, pets or even blown in through open windows. Since pollen is mostly an issue during the summer months, keep your windows closed during this season. Secondly, don’t wear shoes in the house and change your clothes when you come inside if possible. Finally, a HEPA filter is able to remove most of the pollen from air in a home.
